Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Jose M. Hernandez, made history as the United States' first generation Mexican American Astronaut. His story is told in the movie entitled "A Million Miles Away."
Born to parents from Mexico, he started his life working in the agricultural fields of California. Working with his family, he knew that he wanted to "fly in space." He later studied to be an engineer, after learning English at the age of 12. Hernadez began his work with Nasa in 2001, working at the Johnson Space Center, and later became the Chief of Materials and Process Branch. It would be in 2004 that he would begin the intense training, finally being certified in 2006. His first mission was aboard the space shuttle Discovery in 2009. He became the first migrant farmworker to become a NASA astronaut, later becoming a recipient of the 2016 National Hispanic Hero Award. Today we celebrate Mr. Hernandez and his legacy, who ferociously worked to make his dreams come true.

Four of the district's seven eligible campuses were awarded this designation. We would like to thank the teachers for all of their continued hard work in helping to build a legacy for our students here at Donna ISD. The following campuses each received a Star designation.
