Donna ISD Welcomes Thomas Weldon Jones as Donna High School’s New Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator

The Donna Independent School District is proud to announce the hiring of Thomas Weldon Jones as the new Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator for Donna High School. The appointment was approved by the Donna ISD Board of Trustees during their regular school board meeting on December 17, 2024.

Jones, a native of the Rio Grande Valley, brings a wealth of experience and a history of success to the Donna Redskins. A 2005 graduate of McAllen High School, Jones continued his academic and athletic journey at Texas A&M University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History in 2009. As a student-athlete, Jones walked on to the Aggies football team and played as a defensive lineman for two seasons. Prior to Texas A&M, he played on the offensive line at Trinity University from 2005 to 2006.

Jones’ coaching career spans over a decade and demonstrates his dedication to fostering student-athletes’ success both on and off the field. His professional experience includes:

 

· 2010-2012: PSJA Southwest High School – Head Freshman Football Coach, Assistant Powerlifting Coach, and History Teacher.

· 2012-2013: Nikki Rowe High School – Varsity Offensive Line Coach, Track & Field Assistant Coach, and History Teacher.

· 2014-2016: McAllen Memorial High School – Varsity Offensive Line Coach, Track & Field Assistant Coach, and History Teacher.

· 2016-2023: PSJA North High School – Varsity Co-Offensive Coordinator/Run Game Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, Offseason Strength Coordinator, Offensive Line Coach, Head Boys Powerlifting Coach, and History Teacher.

· 2024-Present: Economedes High School – Assistant Head Football Coach, Co-Offensive Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, Offseason Coordinator, Offensive Line Coach, and Head Powerlifting Coach.

Donna ISD Superintendent Dr. Angela Dominguez expressed her enthusiasm for the new hire. “Thomas Jones brings a combination of deep experience, strong leadership, and a passion for helping students succeed both academically and athletically,” Superintendent Dominguez said. “We are confident he will lead the Donna High School football program to new heights and inspire our student-athletes to excel on and off the field.”

Donna ISD Athletic Director Ramiro Leal praised Jones’ credentials and character. “In interviewing Coach Jones, it became clear that he is a perfect fit for Donna High School,” Leal said. “His enthusiasm, strong recommendations from colleagues, and his commitment to student success stood out. He’s a people person with great character and a vast knowledge of the game. Coach Jones genuinely cares about his players and their growth, and I’m confident he’ll make a positive impact on our program. The kids are going to love working with him, and I believe great things are ahead for Donna High School football.”

Jones himself shared his excitement about the opportunity. “I’m beyond thrilled to join the Donna Redskins family,” Jones said. “This is an incredible chance to work with talented students and a supportive community. Growing up in the Valley, I remember when Donna was a

powerhouse and a team everyone respected. My goal is to bring that pride and tradition back. I’m ready to hit the ground running and help our athletes reach their full potential.”
