The Donna Independent School District will offer a new specialized or magnet school concept to elementary age students at the start of the 2021-2022 school year.
Effective August 23rd, parents of PreK-3-5th grade students will have the opportunity to enroll their child at the newly designated J.W. Caceres Discovery Academy located at 503 South Hutto Road. The school, which has been in existence for more than 50 years, will be transitioning from a public elementary to a full-blown discovery campus over the next three years.
Administrators here are excited about the new opportunity available for students. They believe a discovery education will embrace students’ creativity, curiosity and imagination and prepare them to be critical thinkers, problem-solvers and risk-takers ready to face the world. Principal Sarah Perez hopes this model of teaching will re-ignite the love of learning in students.
"We’re excited for the launch of the Discovery Academy at JWC, because it will encourage and nurture our students’ curiosity and imagination through inquisitive hands." Perez said. "Students will have the opportunity to learn a variety of skills and be challenged to embrace their competitive nature."
Perez said the school will start off offering robotics and coding this coming new year followed by agriculture science the second year and theatre the third year. Perez said the new course and program offerings should prove to be challenging yet exciting and fun for students.
"The new course and program offerings will include many hands-on activities that will instill the love of knowledge for all students." Perez said.
Incoming third grade student Stacey Flores is looking forward to the new curriculum.
"I’m very excited," Flores said. "It’s going to be mind blowing learning how to code and build stuff."
